That was a GREAT day - 6 total beginners on my 1 day ‘bring your own project’ workshop @paddockartstudios - in fact 3 of them plan to bring another project in March (jan sb’s feb are sold out!). I’m always thrilled to see what people bring and what we can all learn together as we explore the pieces - today, 2 footstools, a curved high seat, 2 occasional dining chairs & a deep seated nursing chair - we discovered a footstool , made of polystyrene (😓) , ouch. and on the flip side a chair hair stuffed beautifully, but years ago, by a students dad, staples, nails and more staples, today was hard going at times and everyone digged deep. Running this next April having had several requests for a workshop for bigger projects … not necessarily bigger in size, but in scale, where there is time to web, to stitch & stuff, lash springs, to add buttons or nails. As always with my BYO workshops, I provide the sundries (calico, tacks, staples, polywadding, platform cloth) plus the tea & biscuits! We agree the piece you are going to bring, so we can work out what might reasonably be achieved, what additional materials might need to be ordered in (charged at cost), and if there is any prep work required. We work in a small group, everybody with their own project, but sharing learning across the studio as each piece offers up its own challenges. It is 3 days (18 hours) of guided workshop time and I provide a set of hand tools for each student for use on the day - staple guns and sewing machines are shared. We are in the Main Studio @paddockartstudios in the very heart of Lewes, East Sussex (just tucked behind @lewescastle - a historical market town just over an hour from London and 15 mins from Brighton by train. There’s a SLOTH on the workbench - could not be a more fitting segue from yesterday’s 5.58 grid post. This glorious bag is from Costa Rica - I went there once about 20 odd years ago, it was utterly incredible, the most luscious landscape, waterfalls, volcanos, vivid colour and friendliest vibe with the exception that I was TERRORIZED by a rescued orphan capuchin monkey, it sped after me (when it spotted me from a distance, for obvs I have never required speedy chasing in my life) and hurled itself on top of my head wrapping its furry snake tail around my neck, every time it saw me, it sounds cuddly, it was not, I’m not over it. I wish they’d rescued a Sloth it may have been similarly threatening but I’d have had a chance to get a head start! Hello Sunshine ☀️ This birch frame footstool is upholstered using sustainable, natural and revalued materials - made to order by me in my Lewes workshop, using a beautiful sunshine yellow wool upper (made from recycled yarns) - and now it’s off to it’s new home. It’s the smaller of my two footstool sizes, but at 39cm diameter with a lightly domed, firm but comfy top it can easily balance a tray or make way for more that one pair of feet. It’s a little unorthodox but I’m using my favourite steel pins (oh don’t pretend you haven’t got a set of favourite pins) to tension & position the hessian on this cork pinboard. The weave is loose and the bird is likely handprinted so setting it true to a cnc disc is a test of goodwill! A quick shot of this small green wool footstool (finally) - it’s 35cm high and 39cm wide it’s got yellow piping, a birch frame and natural/recycled/revalued inners and 100% wool top fabric. It’s flat enough to balance a tray and soft enough to rest your legs. I haven’t any decent photography of it, but it’s made by me, here in my workshop, in Lewes - these usually retail at £130 it’s on sale for £105, with a fiver knocked off for local pick up, otherwise postage & package included. I originally trained (@cssdlondon) and worked as a theatre prop maker - polystyrene gothic graveyards, animatronic chickens, teddy bears full of fake blood filled condoms (yes, really) - at its core it was making to solve a problem, sourcing materials, choosing & adapting a technique, challenging & understanding the purpose. The upholstery commissions I receive these days tend to call for less blood filled teddy bears but I still thrill at the “What does it need to do and how am I going to make this?”. Today on the bench a bespoke cork board for lovely Emma @station_street_studio for her BRILLIANT reformer studio, to help log the spring settings for her students.
